MS Excel, Chapter 2 Formulas, Functions, Formatting and Web Queries

Of the Excel Chapter that we will be covering as part of this course, I find this chapter to be quite insightful and useful for a variety of applications. I would like you to pay close attention to the functions that you learn in this chapter and explain what features of Excel you find that would be useful to you in either your personal or professional life. If you are having trouble thinking of something, feel free to go online and search for examples that you find would be applicable to you.

  1. In my job I use Execel for contact lists. It is an easy way to collect people's names addresses and telephone numbers and if I should need to later, I can used the information I saved to print envelopes, letters, or labels, just by using the information I had already entered into Excel. Excel is also very helpful for me in reporting. I run many reports and work and being able to export them to Excel makes it much easier, because I can add and delete columns, sort the data, add the columns or rows. It is very useful.

  2. I have found I really enjoy working with Excel. I have used Excel in the past for work, but as with Word, I never got into the creative part of it. Merging cells was something I was always so afraid of just incase I did something wrong, but both seem to be user friendly. I feel as though I have so much knowledge now.

  3. Excel is extremely useful to have cells set up to solve equations by simply plugging in the numbers. I use Excel at work to determine the monthly payments people will have based on the mortgage rates and the term of the loan just by plugging in the numbers and Excel does the rest for me. It does so many things I didn't know were possible.

  4. I thought that Excel was only a data entry spreadsheet prior to this class. I really had no idea that it performed all of these calculations for you. I has been very helpful to learn this program and with the knowledge of the formula operations I hope to start using Excel for some of my personal information.

  5. I found out that we can use the SUM icon to calculate the totals instead of inputting formulas to each cell.

  6. I never knew that Excel could create charts and run functions like the average, min, and max before. I can see where these features could be very useful, especially for a business owner! I'm looking forward to discovering more uses for it in the future!

  7. Knowing these SUM functions and formulas is extremely time saving. My husband has Excel spreadsheets for our budget, mortgage, retirement savings and college savings for our daughter. I always thought he was super gifted to be able to do all this, It is so awesome that now I can make my own spreadsheets and make them much prettier too!

  8. I think using all of the SUM functions helps out a lot. It is extremely time saving and it keeps you very organized. Also, creating charts in Excel is very helpful if sometime in the future I will need to create charts for my job.

  10. I have always used Excel at home to track my household spending and to budget our finances. It helps my husband and I to see our spending all together on one spreadsheet. I keep track of each month on a separate tab on the bottom with a summary (on the first)that updates its data from the other tabs. It has been a life saver at tax time!!

I know the "goal seek" and the "what If" functions will definitely help me with my household budgets.
