Many of you may not have had the need to use MS Access in the past, so this would be a good opportunity for you to post comments, feedback, share your thoughts, etc. as you progress through your learning experience. This will be the only post space for all of the Access chapters that you will be completing as part of this course. Although this will be the only post space, I do expect you to make a constructive post each week.
Though this was my first experience with Access it seemed pretty easy to get around. Since I've never used it before I can definately tell the difference between Access and Work or Excel in regards to my comprehension of the program and what it can do. With that said, I am still amazed at all the things that a user is capable of doing with Word and Excel.
ReplyDeleteThe only issue I had was finding how to change the view of the sheet and change the primary key but I was able find the button in the bottom corner and continue on.
Looking forward to see what else can be accomplished with this program also.

I have had minimal exposure to Access and I have only been on the other end as the end user and never the creator of an Access Database. I have to admitt that I thought it would be much more difficult to grasp, it hasn't been as difficult as I thought. I could definitely see this being a useful tool for many people and for a multitude of ways.
ReplyDeleteI had the same issue as James finding how to change the view and the primary key. This is the first project that I had to read the Access chapter twice. Access is defiantly set up different than other office programs, but once I got it it was very easy to create professional looking reports. I'm still finding the SAM to be very critical, my first submission I lost 11 points for misspelling Rodriguez.
ReplyDeleteI bought had Office 2010 on my laptop rather than 2007 which up until now has not been a problem but since I do not have Access and I have never seen it used or heard of it used in the business world I am sort of let down. I can't really afford to go out and buy an outdated program to learn to use another program that I will probably never need. Nonetheless I read along in the book, since, as Crystal said, SAM is a very difficult and trivial grader.
ReplyDeleteI am also using Office 2010 and find it difficult to understand why some things seem to be miscatagorized. Also my book seems to be misplaced, lost or stolen...if anyone should be on campus please let me know so maybe I can arrange to copy some instructions.
ReplyDeleteHello everyone, I seem to be the only one having a hard time with access.
ReplyDeleteJeff I have the book and I'm on campus, call me 508 974-6844.
The query part of Access seemed pretty logical and came fairly easy except for the calculations and crosstab sections. I had some trouble figuring out the order in which to enter the information to make it work correctly. I played around with it for awhile and in the end I was able to understand the order to get it right.
ReplyDeleteIf can help anyone in anyway, please let me know.
I also seem to be having a tough time with Access. I used Access at my previous employment, mostly just entering and again not creating.I remember Access being very difficult to work with and I seem to still be finding that true.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't even get SAM to accept my assignment and also didn't have Access on my computer. It's been a tough week.
Sorry to hear some of you are having issues with access. I didn't find it to difficult maybe because I have never used it before. I did all three assignments one after another one afternoon. I found it was easier that way because the material was fresh in my mind.
ReplyDeleteFor some reason I only had access 2003. My office 2007 did not have access with it for some reason but I was able to download the 60 day trial. That should get me through this class. Christine that my help you since you do not have access.
Sue, thanks so much for the information. Thats exactly what I did.
ReplyDeleteOK, so Access hasn't been as difficult as I expected, but some of it is still over my head. I thiink it is one of those things that unless you have a need for it and use it, I don't think I would retain the knowledge of how to use it. I was shocked to see all the things you can do with this, it's pretty cool.
ReplyDeleteDid anyone have any issues fingin the information regarding the Split Form in the textbook? That was probably the thing I had the hardest time with.
What I had trouble with during this last assignment was how to increase the width of the columns to the exact size. I was able to figure it out but in the book all I kept finding was how to increase the column to fit the size of the text. Unfortunately that wasn't the size the program was looking for. I have also become accustomed to Excel and was looking for the markers to come up when you change the size of a row or column.
ReplyDeletePatti, I had trouble with the split form part of the assignment too, I needed to get help at the BCC Library. Overall I felt like Access was the most challenging chapters so far. I don't know if it was due to that not many people have used it before so I had trouble finding help and another problem was no one I know had it on their computer and neither did my town library. Trying to concentrate at the BCC New Bedford library is extremely difficult. The last assignment I did there the student next to me was rapping the entire time, it was interesting. I am so glad Access is over!
ReplyDeleteI know some of you have had issues with the grading on SAM and now I need to complain to. I lost 11 points because I forgot to type the word "the" on the validation rule on the third Access assignment. Can't go back it was my third submission.
ReplyDeleteI agree I should have points taken off but not to get any credit doesn't make sense. SAM should be grading if I created the validation rule then deduct for spelling....just had to share.
James, I also had a tough time trying to figure out how to adjust the width. It was on my third try on SAM before I got it. I kept looking back at the book for support and really couldn't find it. But, I'm happy I figured it out.
ReplyDeleteSue, I agree with you in regards to the grading on SAM for this assignment.
Access...I'm glad it's over.
I didn't realize we were suppose to post a blog entry for PowerPoint here, I thought the section was only for Access.
ReplyDeleteI found the PowerPoint assignment fairly simple. I have used PowerPoint a few times in the past for school projects so I felt comfortable with the basics and the other items covered in this project. I've never used shapes with my presentations before though, I think learning to uses them will be very helpful in future presentations.
I like Power Point...I have never had the opportunity or need to use it before. I think it's very user friendly.
